History

Bristol Brigg Point sits at the edge of one of Bristol’s most exciting areas of transformation, forming part of the wider regeneration around the emerging Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus led by the University of Bristol.

The site tells a rich industrial story. A mish-mash of buildings of varying heights and ages once occupied the plot — layered structures shaped by Bristol’s 19th-century industrial heyday and adapted over decades for different tenants and uses. Rather than erase that history, the design draws directly from it.

Bristol Pennant sandstone forms a robust plinth. Textured brickwork rises above. Oxide-red exposed steel references the area’s working past.

Working together AWW’s architectural and interiors team have brought the history of the area to life through this development.

Project Vision

AWW drew upon our vast experience in designing Purpose Built Student Accommodation to create a place for residents to feel connected to this vibrant emerging neighbourhood, while providing space for respite and separation from the buzz.

Drawing on the industrial heritage of Bristol and the materials and forms of the buildings in the surrounding area. Reflecting these in the design language with colours, textures and shapes. Curved forms and rich industrial colour palette.

The industrial language is expressed through materiality, proportion and rhythm. Taking this lead our internal styling, artwork, wayfinding and signage for Brigg Point resonates with the structural frame and proportions of its surrounding context.

Design Intent

Working closely with operator Aparto and Watkin Jones, AWW has delivered a scheme that balances commercial performance with resident wellbeing and amenity.

As you first walk into the double height space the feature element is the timber panelling which frames the staircase, guiding you up to reception. Embracing the curved forms in the entrance matting and feature colours with the rich rusty red to the balustrade. These industrial materials are balanced with the delicate feature lighting that is framed by the double height glazing. Opposite the reception sits a lounge area with feature inset carpet which blends with the industrial tile.

Every element was carefully considered to ensure strong operational efficiency while creating environments students genuinely want to live in.

Design Delivery

Our interiors team worked closely with the client, Aparto, to ensure that their branding was embedded within the design. This was driven in collaboration through the exploration of look and feel proposals including; concept imagery, material boards and axos.

As the building design was developed we carefully considered space planning options that would ensure each space was efficient and provided all requested facilities.

It was our technical drawing pack which the contractor used to deliver the scheme. We also hosted coordination workshops with specialists including; M&E, acoustician, fire specialist and joiners.

Social Value / Sustainability

Targeting BREEAM Excellent and WiredScore Silver, the scheme is fully car free and packed with sustainability features: 84 cycle spaces, green roofs, wildlife planting, and a commitment to recycle 80% of construction waste.

Ground floor commercial units support local economic activity, while the covered space within the courtyard has been designed for potential student or community events. Together, these elements reinforced the project’s ambition to deliver lasting value beyond its walls.

The external and internal spaces embrace the incorporation of plentiful greenery to soften spaces and bring a sense of calm.

User Experience

Student wellbeing sat at the centre of every decision.

Natural light, clear wayfinding and a considered hierarchy of private, shared and social spaces create an environment that feels calm, safe and intuitive. Bedrooms offer privacy and retreat, while communal spaces encourage interaction, collaboration and belonging.

The building’s unique gym and wellness suite features a ceiling with bold colour use in the form of a plimsole line to the ceiling. And a bespoke manifestation designed with curved elements, allows natural light into the space but also allows for a sense of privacy.

Wellbeing

The array of spaces available to students intend to support diversity and inclusion through the fabrics, colour palette and materials – each space defined and framed for a distinct purpose but simultaneously flowing from one to the next.

Teapoints pick up on the curved design language with the bespoke joinery along with the rich bold colour pallet. A casual space to encourage students to come together as they transition through the building.

A full colour application has been used to define the media space as a cosy space to relax, watch a film and catch up with friends. A curtain to divide the space allows flexibility and enables multiple groups to use the space.

The study lounge offers a variety of settings which allow for individual and group study. Acoustic panelling and wall mounted screens provide a comfortable environment to study and vibrant artwork adds colour and a sense of identity to the space.
