Location Weston-super-Mare
Client North Somerset Council
Awards Winner of Large Commercial Building at the LABC Building Excellence Awards 2021

A brief history

North Somerset Council wanted a state-of-the-art facility to create a focal point and regional centre of excellence for food and drink businesses across the South West. A former airfield was chosen as the site for the new Food Enterprise Zone in North Somerset, just 10 minutes from the M5.

Vision

The vision was for a dynamic food and drink innovation centre offering food-grade business units, product development facilities and a business engagement centre to help local business grow. The Food Enterprise Support Scheme is a West of England Combined Authority initiative, delivered in partnership with the Food & Drink Forum as operators of the Food Works SW to support businesses across the region.

Delivering the design

The Innovation Centre comprises eight 1000 sq/ft and four 1500 sq/ft purpose built affordable and flexible food-grade business units to lease plus four product development rooms and a fully equipped trial kitchen to enable businesses of any size to scale up production, introduce new lines, produce short runs and pilot improvements.

The design includes an Engagement Centre used for meetings, events and marketing, together with a range of incubation and starter units, all designed to BRC Food Grade 7, for product development and small manufacturers looking to scale up their production.

User experience

The Engagement Centre and café allow businesses and individuals to share ideas and to network. The Business Units at the Food Works SW provide modern and cost-effective food-grade premises which conform to the highest standards and meet the latest environmental health legislation.

Looking to the future

The current pandemic has highlighted the importance of food production and the centre is ideally placed to help the region to respond to the impact of the coronavirus, offering food-grade business units, development kitchens and technical support.

FoodWorks SW is designed to be a ‘one stop shop’ so that businesses can draw on support and expertise at a local, regional and national level.

The Food Works hub supporting product development and business engagement

The dynamic development supports local food and drink businesses with state of the art facilities, technical support and expert advice. The spaces have been designed to the highest hygiene standards whilst offering a welcoming and engaging climate in which to operate.

Production and Innovation hubs working in partnership

The site is unique in its capacity to host food and drink businesses of any size, form and status. Food Works sets out to encourage engagement, innovation, creation and development hence the two hubs co-existing on one site.

The Engagement Centre

The multi-functional development offers food and drink businesses the opportunity to plan, create and innovate. As part of this the site hosts an engagement centre to support learning and collaboration between these local enterprises.

Onsite development kitchens

The site houses four development kitchens which are equipped to support businesses in developing their products from small start ups to large enterprises.

"As a practice with regional studios we are passionate about supporting local business and in Food Works we found an ideal opportunity to do just this. We worked closely with this talented delivery team to achieve Food Works and we are delighted to witness the success the centre is now enjoying. The support Food Works offers local food and drink businesses to thrive is excellent, particularly in the current climate."
