AWW was appointed to develop a new Urgent Care Centre (UCC) facility for the University Teaching Hospital Lewisham to improve its primary care, accident and emergency services. We worked with the hospital to replan five wards and medical facilities whilst maintaining the Emergency Department.
Adjacent to the heritage buildings that denote the hospital’s main entrance, the new centre was designed in planar glass, metal panelling and deep overhanging eaves to give effective canopies to the doorways whilst remaining sympathetic to the existing buildings.
A new modular building clad in Euroclad Micro-rib panels was provided to replace part of the old ‘workhouse’ and accommodate the displaced paediatrics’ department.
A new ‘blue light’ entrance and public main entrance were created at each end of a new ‘mall’ to give access to the A&E, UCC and Outpatients’ departments.
The reconfiguration of this new CCU focused on achieving best patient outcomes and patient experience. To do this successfully without putting patients at risk whilst construction works were carried out this £12M scheme was delivered in multiple phases.
