A Brief History

This project was conceived to address the shortage of primary healthcare facilities in South Bristol. Along with the Hengrove Leisure Centre and the South Bristol Skills Academy, it formed part of the first wave of the regeneration of Hengrove Park, providing modern social infrastructure for the local community and paving the way for the delivery of approximately 1,450 new homes on adjacent land.

Project Vision

Procured through a public-private partnership, South Bristol Community Hospital provides a range of primary healthcare services, including physiotherapy, outpatient care, diagnostics, and minor injury treatment, as well as operating theatres and 60 inpatient bedspaces. The design concept was developed with a focus on clarity of layout, legibility, accessibility, and maximising natural daylight.

Design Delivery

The design solution is driven by departmental adjacency and future flexibility. Clinical spaces are contained in 2 three storey wings, each side of a central atrium that acts as a focal point for the building. Spaces become increasingly private as the building ascends, and the main entrance faces a new public plaza while the rear service entrance is at the opposite end. The layout therefore reflects the functional and operational constraints, while the building structure allows for future flexibility and adaptability as the health needs of the community inevitably change over time.

Sustainability

The hospital offers a wide range of primary healthcare services and extensive outpatient facilities. It incorporates various environmental design features and is designed to consume 30% less energy than the NHS best-practice benchmark.

Entry Point

The main entrance faces the new public plaza and frames the opening into the Hengrove Park regeneration area.

Atrium Space

The central atrium acts as a light, bright focal point, aiding legibility and accessibility.

We believe you have a sound concept of functionality and departmental adjacencies. The model of two linked wings will work well, aiding orientation and allowing for future extension.”
